A SENSITIVE AND SPECIFIC IMMUNOASSAY FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF THE ANTIBODIES PRESENT IN HORSE ANTIVENOMS ENDOWED WITH THE CAPACITY TO BLOCK THE PHOSPHOLIPASE A2-DEPENDENT HEMOLYSIS INDUCED BY SNAKE VENOMS J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
ROCHA CAMPOS,A. C. M.; FREITAS,M. C. W. DE; YAMAGUCHI,I. K.; MARCELINO,J. R.; DIAS DA SILVA,W..
Phospholipase A2 (PLA2), a component of most snake venom toxins, cleaves 3-sn-phosphoglycerides releasing lysophosphatidyl-choline. The indirect quantitative assay method for PLA2 was standardized for specific antivenom titration in a fast and sensitive assay by the similarity with the hemolysis induced by PLA2 and by complement system in sheep erythrocytes. The curves obtained by plotting the degree of hemolysis against the doses of snake venom are concave to the abscissa axis following an equation similar to that previously described for the hemolysis induced by the C system. We observed that venoms of some Bothrops, Crotalus and Micrurus species contained around 1 x 10 to 10<img...

Abscess secondary to facial snakebite J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
QUIROGA,M.; AVILA-AGÜERO,M. L.; FAINGEZICHT,I..
In Costa Rica, approximately 700 snakebite cases occur each year, 5 to 10 of which result in death. At the Hospital Nacional de Niños (HNN), 6 to 10 cases are reported annually, more than half of these cases and nearly all deaths are result from Bothrops asper snakebite. This venomous snake, popularly known as the "terciopelo", most often attacks the lower or upper limbs and characteristically produces local tissue damage, which can be severe. The following is a report of the first case of a non-fatal and unusual facial bite caused by Bothrops asper in our country.

ABSENCE OF SEASONAL EFFECT ON THE IMMUNOMODULATORY ACTION OF BRAZILIAN PROPOLIS ON NATURAL KILLER ACTIVITY J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
SFORCIN,J. M.; KANENO,R.; FUNARI,S. R. C..
Propolis, a beehive product widely used in folk medicine as an antiinflammatory agent, has been attracting researchers' attention to scientifically elucidate its biological properties and therapeutic activities. The aim of this paper was to study the possible effect of propolis on natural killer activity, since propolis immunomodulatory action has been suggested, especially on non-specific immunity. Propolis was produced by africanized honeybees (Apis mellifera L.), collected throughout a whole year, and pooled by season. Hydroalcoholic solutions of propolis were prepared with each pool and administered to rats by gavage over three days. Natural killer activity of non-adherent spleen cells was evaluated by the 51Cr-release cytotoxicity assay against Yac-1...

Action of cobra venom on the renal cortical tissues: electron microscopic studies J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
RAHMY,T. R..
The effect of intramuscular (IM) injection of a sub-lethal dose of Naja haje cobra venom (0.015 mug/gm body weight) on the ultrastructure of renal cortical tissues of rabbits was studied at different time intervals after envenomation. Succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) enzyme activity was also detected in the renal cortical tubules. Three hours after venom injection, slight changes were seen in visceral cells and glomerular endothelia. The cortical tubular epithelia revealed an increase of lysosomal structures, cytoplasmic vacuolization, and nuclear irregularity. Severe ultrastructural changes were recorded 6 hours after envenomation, including hypertrophied parietal cells, blebbed visceral epithelial cells, and foot process disorganization. Dilated glomerular...

ALARM PHEROMONES AND THE INFLUENCE OF PUPAL ODOR ON THE AGGRESSIVENESS OF Polybia paulista (IHERING) (HYMENOPTERA: VESPIDAE) J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
MANZOLI-PALMA,M.F.; GOBBI,N.; PALMA,M.S..
Field bioassays were used to demonstrate that aggressive behavior of Polybia paulista (Ihering) workers is elicited by alarm pheromones present in the venom reservoirs of nest defenders and that the brood care pheromone (pupal odor) produced by the young inside the nest also plays an important defensive role. Pupal odor was extracted from the surface of pupa bodies with methanol. When bioassayed alone, the pupal odor elicited only attractiveness of workers towards the odor source, but no stinging attacks were observed. However, in the presence of alarm pheromones, the brood care pheromone potentiated the effect caused by the pupal odors, increasing the number of stinging attacks during an action of colony defense. Thus, the presence of pupae within the...

An epidemiological review of scorpion stings in Venezuela: the Northeastern region J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
DE SOUSA,L.; PARRILLA-ALVAREZ,P.; QUIROGA,M..
In Venezuela, the restricted manner of works on scorpion envenoming has contributed little to the real magnitude and knowledge of this subject in our country. The lack of basic scorpiofauna knowledge, distribution, clinical manifestations, and especially of specific treatments justify multidisciplinary studies. The purpose of these studies is to obtain information that allows the elaboration of a preventive plan. This paper demonstrates the magnitude of scorpion envenomings in Venezuela.

AN IN VITRO STUDY OF THE EFFECTS OF VENOM OF AUSTRALIAN ELAPIDS ON MURINE SKELETAL MUSCLE AND THE PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF HOMOLOGOUS PLASMA J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
BUTLER,T. L.; JACOBSEN,P. F.; MIRTSCHIN,P. J.; KAKULAS,B. A..
The venom of many dangerous Australian snakes has a myotoxic component and some are strongly myolytic. The myotoxicity of venom of seven Australian elapid snakes was studied to determine their relative in vitro potency in causing cell death of C2C12 cells, a myoblast cell line, and murine myotubes in mixed cell culture. The venom of Pseudechis australis proved to be the most myotoxic, Austrelaps superbus and Pseudechis porphyriacus venoms also exhibited high myotoxicity relative to the other venoms tested. The specificity of Pseudechis porphyriacus venom was tested using the human glioma cell line TC3 and was shown to exhibit a general cytotoxicity. Myotoxicity, however, was the predominant action of the venom. It has long been known that certain animals...

AN in vivo METHOD FOR ESTIMATING THE CONCENTRATION OF CROTAMINE IN A SOLUTION J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
HAMPE,O. G.; BELLÓ,A. A..
very sensitive method for estimating the concentration of crotamine in a solution was developed. This method was based on the time required for the appearance of permanent hyperextension of the rear legs of mice as a function of the dose administered. This method can be used to determine toxin doses as low as 0.32 mg/kg . Its high specificity for crotamine means that it can be used to measure toxin concentrations in the presence of other proteins and polypeptides.
